Seasonal Tropical Cyclone Activity Forecast North West Pacific Ocean and South China Sea | June 2023

Based on current climatic conditions and activity in 2023 to date, this report forecasts:

  • 24–26 tropical storms (TS) are forecasted to form in the Northwest Pacific Basin (NWP) and the South China Sea (SCS) in 2023, which is in line with the long-term climatic average (LTCA). The number of strong typhoons (STY) will be slightly above average (about 9–11), while 6-8 TSs are forecasted to make landfall in China, which is close to the LTCA.
  • The number of tropical cyclones (TC) expected to affect overall China and South China are forecasted to reach 12-14 and 8-10 respectively, in line with the LCTA. East China and Shanghai may experience more TC this year, with the total number forecasted to reach around 9-11 and 2-3 respectively, highlighting that TCs are more active in East China and the risks of natural disasters may be higher than average.
